Hi friends! Thanks for visiting my website.
Here’s a little bit about me.
I am a proud gay/queer man. I use he or they pronouns. And I believe strongly in lifting up other members of my communities. I’m a survivor of physical and psychological abuse, and I share my story to help others.
In my professional life, I am a professor of law at the University of California Irvine School of Law. I study the social and legal dynamics of data sharing, collection, and use, including the relationship between technology and power. My work focuses on privacy, digital governance, and the civil rights of the LGBTQ+ community.
I LOVE researching as well as teaching, and I’m super proud to have won awards for both. My work has been published in leading law reviews and peer reviewed journals. I’ve won two Best Paper awards, testified before Congress and the European Parliament, won more than 10 grants for my research, and engage deeply with my community wherever I can.
But the best part about being an academic is the people. I’ve been privileged to have outstanding mentors, and those mentors have become some of my closest friends. They helped me find my voice, set the tone for our community, and always have my back. I’ve also had the honor of meeting and mentoring new scholars in the field. I try to do for them what my mentors did for me. And my students have been extraordinary. I’ve taught students at New York Law School, Princeton, Northeastern University, Tel Aviv University, Fordham University School of Law, Hebrew University, American University, and delivered countless talks to law review students and seminar students. So many amazing colleagues.
I got engaged in May, 2021 in Paris! And I got married in April, 2023 in Palm Springs, California.
I love to travel, run, cook/bake, and do crossword puzzles (and the New York Times Spelling Bee). I helped put myself through a school by working in a sandwich shop and as a group fitness instructor. That was so much fun!
I’ve run a few marathons, but will NEVER do that again. I still like to run, but only a few miles a few times a week. You can find me on Peloton rides, though!
You can find me on BlueSky.
You can also follow my LGBTQ+ legal project @Legally_Queer on Instagram.
We educate the queer and broader communities about how law affects gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming people. It’s fun! And I hope it will grow.
Peabody (pictured) is adorable. Isn’t she? That’s her Danish, custom-made house and her Egyptian cotton blanket, which she just stole from her dads. She also has an Instagram account: @PeabodyTheDog.
